You are right to be concerned about the current treatment plan. Pharmacological interventions can be counter productive and behavioural approaches highly damaging if it is PDA or a PDA presentation of an autistic spectrum disorder.
Regrettably, too many are unable to look far beyond the behaviour and note the similarities to ADHD combined with conduct problems, yet fail to spot the acute anxiety that is the root cause.

Clearly I do not know if your stepson has PDA and I am not in the business of providing an amateur on-line diagnosis. However I know from first hand how damaging the wrong approach can be and know that without the correct support, we too could be in your position in the future.

At the moment he is getting treatment for Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) this has happened in the last 3 weeks and he is 19 years old now and also frustrating that adult social work services in Helensburgh won’t take him on but they think he just has bad behaviour and that the police and jail will sort him out. He is on the adult protection setup for being vulnerable with being sexually assaulted by 2 men coming home from the pub. So things at the moment are tiring and frustrating for my wife who has battled for help for over 10 years.

We are keen to get a diagnoses of PDA but Doctors and head of the adult protection aren’t keen because they feel PDA is made up to cover up bad behaviour and are sticking with ADHD, but we have found out that treatment and other actions to help my step-son could be no use if he has PDA.
